Movies That Could Have Been
In August 1963, after Barbra made her appearances at the Coconut Grove she was offered many numerous movie roles. One came from director/producer Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. who offered her the lead role in The Young Lovers. She wanted to accept, but had to immediately start rehearsals for Funny Girl.
In 1976 before production began on A Star Is Born, Jon Peters signed a 3 movie deal with Columbia. One of them being Eyes of Laura Mars. Columbia hoped Barbra would accept, but she turned it down. Instead Faye Dunaway took the role.
In 1969, Barbra turned down They Shoot Horses Don't They?, because she said she didn't want to do all that dancing. So Jane Fonda stepped in, and got an Oscar nod. Another Jane Fonda role Barbra turned down was, Klute, which won Jane and Oscar. Two other roles she turned down was The Devils, which Vanessa Redgrave received critical success. She also turned down Cabaret, which gave Liza Minnelli an Oscar.
Two more projects Barbra turned down was the role of the mother in The Exorcist and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. She turned down the latter one because she said 31 was too young to have a 12 year old son. So Ellen Burstyn took both roles and got an Oscar nod for Exorcist and an Oscar for Alice.
Now you can ask yourself WHY Barbra?
